水彩専門誌「The Best of Watercolor」掲載

今年（2025年）2月、アメリカの水彩画コンテスト「Splash 26」にてファイナリストに選出していただきました。
以前から注目していたコンテストでしたので、大変嬉しく思っております。

その「Splash 26」を特集した水彩専門誌「The Best of Watercolor, Summer 2025」が印刷版およびデジタル版として発刊されました。
光栄なことに、私の作品を Portrait & Figure 部門の冒頭ページに、見開きで掲載していただきました。
JAMES McNEILL WHISTLER 氏の名言とともに、自身の文章も掲載していただき、心より感謝いたします。


今回入選した作品は
『杪夏（びょうか）/ End of Summer』です。

When I paint portraits, I often use members of my family as models because I know their personality and essential characteristics, and I want to express our connection through my art. As I layer the paint, I pour my imagination and feelings into the subject’s eyes, expression and pose. The process becomes an improvised duet between artist and model until, gradually, the subject begins to take on a life of its own. It’s in this pivotal moment that I fi nd the true joy of painting.
End of Summer is a portrait of my daughter. She’s 18 years old—at that stage in life where one begins the transition from childhood into adulthood. I wanted to capture her feelings of hope and uncertainty about the future through the interplay of light and shadow, and the symbolic buds of a Japanese anemone fl ower that’s just about to bloom.

私は人物画を描くとき、家族をモデルにすることがよくあります。
彼らの性格や本質を知っているので、そのつながりを作品として表現したいと思うからです。
描きながら私は自分の主観や想像をモデルの目や表情、ポーズに重ね合わせていきます。その過程は、画家とモデルが奏でる即興の二重奏のようで、次第に絵の中の人物が独り歩きを始めます。そこに人物画を描く醍醐味を感じます。
この絵『End of Summer』は、私の娘を描いたものです。この時彼女は18歳。子供から大人へと変わり始める年頃です。そんな彼女が心に抱く未来への希望と不安の心情を絵の中の光と影に込め、そしてこれから花を咲かせるシュウメイギクの蕾に重ねて表現しました。
